How to build a 10-meter semi-anechoic chamber?

Have you ever wondered how we build our 10-meter semi-anechoic chambers for radiated emission and/or immunity testing? In this video, we take you through the most important parts of this high-tech chamber we built for Force Technology (formerly known as Delta).

The term ‘10-meter’ is the test distance between the receiving antenna and the equipment under test when performing a radiated emissions test. These are amongst the largest EMC test chambers in the business, and it’s quite complicated to keep measurements over these distances within the required specifications of CISPR16-1-4. Not so much for us because we have been developing and installing these chambers since 1995.

The chamber in this video was built in 2012 for FORCE Technology, one of Denmark’s large GTS (RTO) institutes. They play an important part in the backbone of the Danish innovation system through their contribution to technological development. At the time, it was the first chamber we delivered with the new hybrid absorbers from our sister company, Dutch Microwave Absorber Solutions (DMAS).

Enjoy watching the video, and please do not hesitate to contact our EMC Technical Consultant, Uliana Trucchi, for more information on our range of 10-meter semi-anechoic chambers for radiated emission and/or immunity.

The advantages of screwing clampings

It is not easy to replace soldered finger-stocks in the doorframe of your test chamber. That’s why we switched already in 1999 to screw clampings. Our colleague Gerco van Diemen explains why you will benefit from this. “Clampings hold the finger-stocks in place. Finger-stocks are the copper clamps that ensure that the door of a test chamber is completely sealed and no RF leakage occurs. They are a vulnerable part of a chamber’s Faraday cage construction. Traditionally, these are soldered, but we have developed a way where using screws has the same protective effect.”

Our services include maintenance and validated testing. We recommend that both are executed by authorized personnel only. Our expert teams can perform preventive maintenance on RF-shielded doors, mode-stirrer systems, and positioning equipment such as turntables. We also offer validation services to see if your EMC test chamber or RF-shielded room still functions within its intended limits and avoiding unexpected down-time or product recalls at the same time.

A shielded room can perform conducted emission and immunity EMC measurements, eliminating harmful external influences, leading to more accurate and consistent test results. Being a Faraday cage, a shielded room will not only improve test results but will also form an excellent aid in protecting information and essential hardware. Comtest can assist governments, the military, financial institutions, and large corporations in protecting what matters most in critical situations. We offer the highest quality, sensitivity, and security before, during and after working with you.
