New NSIL validation method for testing under 30 MHz

Does your test chamber meet the new Normalized Site Insertion Loss (NSIL) validation method for testing under 30 MHz? The demand for certified radiated emission testing at low frequencies has surged, particularly due to the introduction of wireless battery charging solutions for vehicles. We asked our specialist, R&D Engineer Dmitriy Penkin, why this could be an issue for automotive companies with a testing chamber.

Dmitriy Penkin: “Before NSIL, testing below 30MHz was done with a less flexible method, also known as Large-loop Antenna System (LLAS), which demands a bulky measurement setup and cannot basically house large EUTs, e.g. automobiles. To minimise errors and enable the characterisation of extensive units in a user-friendly manner, the NSIL method takes over testing from 9 kHz to 30 MHz. Meanwhile, the chamber validation works as follows: We use the calibrated loop antennas to measure 3 orientations from 5 different positions. With these 15 measurements, we can calculate the resulting site insertion loss deviation and conclude whether a test chamber complies with the CISPR 16-1-4 criterion.”

Our Senior Technical Consultant Uliana Trucchi adds: “It can be confusing for OEMS and test houses. There are more and more testing standards and methods. That’s one of the reasons our R&D experts continuously chase, develop and examine novel test methods in-house as soon as they are introduced in newly published standards. Hence, it’s quite easy for us to execute the NSIL and other tests in test chambers now.”

One of the companies that called Comtest Engineering for help was TÜV Rheinland Nederland B.V.. Their Lab Manager, Jose Manuel Martinez Ortega, tells us how he experienced working with our team. “In my experience, only a few companies react to new standard requirements as Comtest does. Looking to implement this new requirement, as per CISPR 16-1-4, they reacted very quickly. Working with their team, I was impressed by the precise and acute way to mitigate things around. One short meeting was enough “to cut the cheese” and make the necessary arrangements for measurements. The latter took about half a day, and the test report of compliance was issued right after. Our laboratory is in the position to provide Radiated/Spurious Emissions testing in the range of 9kHz to 30MHz in a more reliable, faster and efficient manner to our customers thanks to the professional service received from Comtest. I strongly recommend this team for this new type of measurement in 3m semi-anechoic chambers.”

Do you want to be sure your test chamber is ready to pass the NSIL test? Send a message to Uliana Trucchi, and she will help you.

We also thank our friends at FORCE Technology for using the photo we took after we did the NSIL test in one of their chambers.

The advantages of screwing clampings

It is not easy to replace soldered finger-stocks in the doorframe of your test chamber. That’s why we switched already in 1999 to screw clampings. Our colleague Gerco van Diemen explains why you will benefit from this. “Clampings hold the finger-stocks in place. Finger-stocks are the copper clamps that ensure that the door of a test chamber is completely sealed and no RF leakage occurs. They are a vulnerable part of a chamber’s Faraday cage construction. Traditionally, these are soldered, but we have developed a way where using screws has the same protective effect.”

Our services include maintenance and validated testing. We recommend that both are executed by authorized personnel only. Our expert teams can perform preventive maintenance on RF-shielded doors, mode-stirrer systems, and positioning equipment such as turntables. We also offer validation services to see if your EMC test chamber or RF-shielded room still functions within its intended limits and avoiding unexpected down-time or product recalls at the same time.

A shielded room can perform conducted emission and immunity EMC measurements, eliminating harmful external influences, leading to more accurate and consistent test results. Being a Faraday cage, a shielded room will not only improve test results but will also form an excellent aid in protecting information and essential hardware. Comtest can assist governments, the military, financial institutions, and large corporations in protecting what matters most in critical situations. We offer the highest quality, sensitivity, and security before, during and after working with you.
