SAC & FAR testing requirements per the CISPR16 standards

Is 3-metre SAC-testing in a 2-metre volume within standards? Our experts, Uliana Trucchi and Dmitriy Penkin, will inform you about the sometimes confusing chamber design criteria for major standards (CISPR16, CISPR25 and ETSI) in three different posts. This week: Semi Anechoic Chamber (SAC) & Fully Anechoic Room (FAR) testing requirements per the CISPR16 standards.

Dmitriy: “As you can see in the table, a direct relation between maximum EUT dimensions versus test distance is established in the recent CISPR16 standards. We noticed that there is some puzzlement about these criteria.”

Uliana: “One of the questions I receive regularly is if 3-metre SAC-testing in a 2-metre volume is within the CISPR16 standards. It is, strictly speaking, not: to be able to conduct accredited measurements, you shall meet EUT-related limitations shown in the table. Hence, we must specify the client’s testing needs before designing a chamber. Then, we can consult them on the many standards and which design needs to be executed. But still, a lot of clients make the conversion from testing needs to chamber specifications themselves, which might result in a chamber that will not be set up according to the proper standards.”

Are you considering investing in a Semi-Anechoic Chamber (SAC) or a Fully Anechoic Room (FAR)? Please contact Uliana Trucchi for a free consultation about the latest testing and design requirements. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

In the next post on design criteria, we will take a deep dive into CISPR25.

The advantages of screwing clampings

It is not easy to replace soldered finger-stocks in the doorframe of your test chamber. That’s why we switched already in 1999 to screw clampings. Our colleague Gerco van Diemen explains why you will benefit from this. “Clampings hold the finger-stocks in place. Finger-stocks are the copper clamps that ensure that the door of a test chamber is completely sealed and no RF leakage occurs. They are a vulnerable part of a chamber’s Faraday cage construction. Traditionally, these are soldered, but we have developed a way where using screws has the same protective effect.”

Our services include maintenance and validated testing. We recommend that both are executed by authorized personnel only. Our expert teams can perform preventive maintenance on RF-shielded doors, mode-stirrer systems, and positioning equipment such as turntables. We also offer validation services to see if your EMC test chamber or RF-shielded room still functions within its intended limits and avoiding unexpected down-time or product recalls at the same time.

A shielded room can perform conducted emission and immunity EMC measurements, eliminating harmful external influences, leading to more accurate and consistent test results. Being a Faraday cage, a shielded room will not only improve test results but will also form an excellent aid in protecting information and essential hardware. Comtest can assist governments, the military, financial institutions, and large corporations in protecting what matters most in critical situations. We offer the highest quality, sensitivity, and security before, during and after working with you.
