Mobile absorbers might be the solution to change your 5G/6G test setup. In a series of five posts, our specialists share trends and developments for 2025. This week, Rik de Groot, Research Director of DMAS (Dutch Microwave Absorber Solutions), reveals this new solution for flexible test setups.

Rik de Groot: “Soon, more and more clients are on a mission to test 5G and emerging 6G technologies. These advanced systems operated at millimetre wave and terahertz frequencies, making precise testing crucial due to their sensitivity to obstacles and reflections. Adjustable test rigs quickly reposition antennas and devices to evaluate performance from various angles. This flexibility allows them to replicate real-world scenarios, essential for capturing advanced beamforming signals’ dynamics”.

How can test rigs be adjustable in a user-friendly way?
Rik: “This Mobile Absorber Wall contains movable absorbers to control reflections and manage interference. Think of them as the guards of signals. Adjusting these absorbers, we simulate real-world obstacles and observe how signals behave under different conditions. The combination of adjustable setups and movable absorbers provides the accuracy and flexibility for the most reliable results. We aim for a future where our work technical solutions drive innovations and transform how the world is connected.”

How did the development process go?
Rik: “We have been working on prototypes for a solution for five years. Earlier versions were of galvanised plate steel profiles combined with a wooden bottom piece on wheels. On reflection, that was too laborious, not user-friendly and too costly. The final version in the photo is based on so-called aluminium Bosch profiles. These are lightweight and affordable because they are off-the-shelf products delivered as assembly kits for three types of absorbers with an instruction manual.”
