After six years the closed-cell absorber with the perfect tip

Rik de Groot, the Managing Director of Dutch Microwave Absorber Solutions, and his team spent six years developing a closed-cell absorber with the perfect tip. But why is it so difficult to achieve this?

Rik explains that traditional absorbers are made of polyurethane with an open-cell structure. “This has a downside as it wears down over time and can leak particles after a few years. On the other hand, closed-cell absorbers cannot be cut into a perfect tip from raw material. This presents a dilemma.”

Over the six years, Rik and his team made significant progress: In 2011, they launched their first wedge-shaped absorbers, which they still sell for the EMC-testing market. In 2017, they started manufacturing these wedge-shaped absorbers from EPS, open-cell Expandable Polystyrene, using a mold instead of cutting the shape. Around 2019, they received an increasing demand from clients in the antenna-testing markets who wanted sturdy EPS-absorbers with a perfect tip for measurements above 40 GHz. These are the ones featured in the photo; it’s a family of four different heights designed especially for the antenna-testing market.

At Comtest Engineering, we are delighted to offer our customers this brand-new series of EPS absorbers. Please feel free to contact our specialists Marc Le RoyUliana TrucchiHanneke Mertens – van Veen or Mark Miles for more information.

Upgrading an EMC chamber with new absorbers on old tiles

Can you upgrade an EMC chamber and keep the old, glued ferrite tiles? “It’s possible”, says Uliana Trucchi, one of our technical consultants. “Say you want to replace your old absorbers because you need to meet performances over 1GHz, and you wish to keep the ferrite tiles because they are glued to the chamber’s walls and ceiling. That is exactly what the people from Nemko in Germany asked us for the chamber upgrade in the photo.”

Dust-free absorbers on the AMTA 2024 in Cincinnati

No more dirty chambers! Our mission to create cleaner work environments brought us to Cincinnati’s AMTA 2024 Exhibition. In the photo in the middle, Vincent van de Vrie, the latest addition to our international technical consultancy team, is shown. He said he learned a lot from the many visitors to the three-day event.

Our services include maintenance and validated testing. We recommend that both are executed by authorized personnel only. Our expert teams can perform preventive maintenance on RF-shielded doors, mode-stirrer systems, and positioning equipment such as turntables. We also offer validation services to see if your EMC test chamber or RF-shielded room still functions within its intended limits and avoiding unexpected down-time or product recalls at the same time.

A shielded room can perform conducted emission and immunity EMC measurements, eliminating harmful external influences, leading to more accurate and consistent test results. Being a Faraday cage, a shielded room will not only improve test results but will also form an excellent aid in protecting information and essential hardware. Comtest can assist governments, the military, financial institutions, and large corporations in protecting what matters most in critical situations. We offer the highest quality, sensitivity, and security before, during and after working with you.
