Comtest goes on tour through Asia

After receiving several requests to share knowledge, Bas de Groot and Dimitrios Barakos decided to plan a tour through Asia with their friends from Rohde & Schwarz to help companies handling the new ISO11451-5 & ISO 11452-11 standards for automotive testing in reverberation chambers.

In the photos, you see Bas & Dimitrios at the Hyundai Motor Group R&D Center, Foton Motor Test Center and with our friends Andre NG (EMS systems support engineer at Rohde & Schwarz) and Narayanan Raman (product manager Elektra at Rohde & Schwarz) during a speed course reverberation technology at the BYD head office in Shenzhen, China.

We asked Bas why this specific knowledge is so scarce. Bas: “This new ISO11451-5 standard was introduced in May 2023, and there is little to no experience testing vehicles against this new EMC standard. One of our friends from Rohde & Schwarz Singapore, Dominic Tan, initiates this expedition. Our two companies started joining forces quite soon after introducing this new standard. Under the supervision of Dimitrios, we developed a brand new reverberation test chamber concept, and Rohde & Schwarz developed the EMC test equipment and their new Elektra software, which already includes the drivers for our stirrers.”

Which companies are you visiting? “We started at the Singapore office of Rohde & Schwarz; then we went to China to visit Foton Motor in Beijing, KATECH (Korea Automotive Technology Institute) in Chungnam, Korea and the Automotive EMC test teams of test services providers SGS and CSA Group in Seoul. But we also visited automotive OEMs such as BYD and Hyundai Motor Group.”

Can your followers on LinkedIn profit from your knowledge, as well? Dimitrios: “Of course, we are very open in sharing knowledge; we hold no secrets for the industry. Soon after this trip, my latest presentation on this subject will be included in Rohde & Schwarz Demystifying EMC 2024 program held on February 6, and we will post it on LinkedIn and YouTube soon thereafter. But for people who can’t wait, last year’s presentation, which focuses more on automotive component testing, can be viewed on our company YouTube channel.”

Special thanks to our friend Dominic Tan for initiating the expedition!

Upgrading an EMC chamber with new absorbers on old tiles

Can you upgrade an EMC chamber and keep the old, glued ferrite tiles? “It’s possible”, says Uliana Trucchi, one of our technical consultants. “Say you want to replace your old absorbers because you need to meet performances over 1GHz, and you wish to keep the ferrite tiles because they are glued to the chamber’s walls and ceiling. That is exactly what the people from Nemko in Germany asked us for the chamber upgrade in the photo.”

The number of stirrer positions vs power

Testing time is valuable, so this post provides tips on optimising the number of stirrer positions in your reverberation chamber to fit your budget and test requirements. “There is a delicate balance between the number of stirrer positions and the amplifier power for a given reverberation chamber,” explains our R&D Consultant, Dimitrios Barakos. By collaborating with EMC test solution provider Rohde & Schwarz, we aim to find the most efficient solution for our clients. “

Our services include maintenance and validated testing. We recommend that both are executed by authorized personnel only. Our expert teams can perform preventive maintenance on RF-shielded doors, mode-stirrer systems, and positioning equipment such as turntables. We also offer validation services to see if your EMC test chamber or RF-shielded room still functions within its intended limits and avoiding unexpected down-time or product recalls at the same time.

A shielded room can perform conducted emission and immunity EMC measurements, eliminating harmful external influences, leading to more accurate and consistent test results. Being a Faraday cage, a shielded room will not only improve test results but will also form an excellent aid in protecting information and essential hardware. Comtest can assist governments, the military, financial institutions, and large corporations in protecting what matters most in critical situations. We offer the highest quality, sensitivity, and security before, during and after working with you.
